In Berkeley, someone is waging guerrilla warfare on the city’s meter
maids, vandalizing parking meters. When the prankster leads police detective
Jill Smith and her colleagues on a wild chase into an overgrown ravine,
the game leads to murder. The victim is Madeleine Riordan, a former attorney
famous for defending civil liberties, who had been battling cancer, living
in a nursing home perched on the edge of the ravine. Jill discovers a strange
connection between the meter capers and the dead woman; and then she uncovers
a crime that Madeleine had witnessed—and died trying to stop.
