The story begins fifteen years ago on the Stanford University campus. Benjamin Knowland spies Rebecca Kendall in the library and it is love at first sight, at least for Benjamin. Rebecca, now a professor living in San Francisco, is happily engaged and has thankfully not heard from Benjamin in years. But then Benjamin sends a threatening telegram to her fiancé and days later Benjamin’s blood in found in the trunk of Rebecca’s Volvo.
