CHRONOLOGICAL INDEX: Part 1 (1853-1929)

Editor’s note: This index is a work in progress. Part 1 contains books that appeared BTMF (Before The Maltese Falcon, which arrived on the scene in 1930). Many of the 19th century entries are “dime novels” (and are so noted). There are also several titles that were published anonymously. In the early 20th century, dark and mysterious Chinatown was a popular setting, and the first novels that used the 1906 earthquake as a plot device were published.
