Northern Regional Library Facility (NRLF)

The Northern Regional Library Facility (NRLF) is a cooperative library storage facility owned and operated by the University of California and located on the grounds of UC Berkeley's Richmond Field Station. It serves the four University of California campuses in Northern California, providing off-campus housing for materials of all formats, including archival collections and rare books. Due to on-campus space limitations, a large percentage of Bancroft Library material is stored there.

Phase 3

Phase 3 is a temporary storage facility for The Bancroft Library's collection during the renovation of the Doe Annex scheduled for 2005-2008. Phase 3 resides at UC Berkeley's Richmond Field Station. Online catalogs such as Pathfinder and Melvyl do not indicate Phase 3 holdings. See the Collections Locator to learn the division of The Bancroft Library's collections between Phase 3 and Allston.

Using NRLF and Phase 3 Materials

All Bancroft Library material housed in NRLF and Phase 3 is non-circulating and may be used only in The Bancroft Library Reading Room located at 2121 Allston Way in downtown Berkeley.

To request material housed in NRLF and Phase 3, you may place an order:

Material is available for consultation after 11:00 AM four working days after you place your request. For example, material requested on Monday will be available on Friday at 11:00 AM.

Before requesting items from a manuscript collection, please consult either the printed or on-line finding aid to the collection in order to determine which containers are required.

To place a request in person, submit a paging slip for each item with a separate call number. For a multi-volume title or multi-container collection, a maximum of 5 storage numbers should be listed on each slip. You will receive a copy of the paging slip, which you must bring with you when you come to view the materials in the Reading Room.

For telephone requests, please make a note of the call number and title to facilitate later retrieval of the materials in the Reading Room.

Due to limited transfer space, requests for large quantities of material may not be immediately available. Your request will be divided among subsequent days.

Material retrieved from off-site storage facilities is held for 2 weeks. Materials not consulted within 2 weeks are returned to NRLF or Phase 3. After the initial use of materials transferred from NRLF and Phase 3, a patron may request a 1 week hold and renew this request in 1 week increments as needed.
