Written in a liturgical gothic book hand. Six full page illustrations in slightly arched compartments, on the verso of inserted singletons which are blank on the recto; the facing page with the same border as the miniature page, in blue and gold acanthus leaves placed at the corners, and remaining space filled with green leaf sprays, flowers, strawberries and grotesques; the opening initials, 5-line, in white-patterned pink or blue on a gold ground, infilled with trilobe leaves. The miniatures, by a follower of Willem Vrelant, are: f. 13v (Hours of the Cross), Crucifixion; f. 22v (Hours of the Holy Spirit), Pentecost; f. 30v (Mass of the Virgin), Virgin enthroned holding the Child to whom she offers a piece of fruit, while four angels playing instruments surround them; f. 45v (Hours of the Virgin), Annunciation; f. 107v (Penitential psalms), David in prayer; f. 127v (Office of the Dead), Raising of Lazarus. Historiated initials, 7- or 6-line, in colors with black ink sprays and a few small blue or red flowers and gold leaves, with the historiation mainly in shades of blue, grey and gold: f. 59 (Lauds), Visitation; f. 72 (Prime), Nativity; f. 77v (Terce), Annunciation to the shepherds; f. 82v (Sext), Adoration of the Magi; f. 87 (None), Presentation in the temple; f. 92 (Vespers), Massacre of the Innocents; f. 100v (Compline), Flight into Egypt; f. 170, Michael; f. 171, Peter and Paul; f. 172, John the Baptist; f. 172v, Sebastian; f. 173v, Nicholas; f. 174, Anthony; f. 175v, Mary Magdalene; f. 176v, Catherine; f. 177v, Barbara; f. 178v, Agnes; f. 179v, Genevieve. A 5-line historiated initial on a gold ground on f. 162 (Obsecro te) represents the Pietà. Secondary initials, 2-line on cusped grounds, 1-line on square grounds, both in gold on pink or blue grounds with infilling of the other color; initials within the text touched in yellow; rubrics in red. Marks from pilgrim badges on f. 1. Contemporary note to the end of the prayer on f. 21v. Bound, s. XV, in black calf over wooden boards, rebacked; repeated 4 times, both front and back, is a Flemish animal panel (Weale, Netherlands 314, from Bruges, but without the panel of St. Margaret); 2 contemporary worked brass clasps, closing from top to bottom, with inset, glass covered, small miniatures of saints: in the upper clasp, a female saint; in the lower, a male saint with a staff and a string of shells (?) about his neck (James?); A. W. Byvanck, Les Principaux Manuscrits à Peintures de la Bibliothèque Royale des Pays-Bas… (Paris 1924) p. 80 notes that such clasps with miniatures seem to occur on books from a Vrelant workshop. On the inside of the clasps are the 2 initials “P” and “I” (or “J” for James?) united with a lovers’ knot; gauffered and gilt edges; binding restored, 1974. For a similar binding, see D. Miner, The History of Bookbinding 525-1950 A.D.: an exhibition held at the Baltimore Museum of Art, November 12, 1957 to January 12, 1958, n. 127 with plate. Written in the second half of the fifteenth century for use in the diocese of Bruges, to judge from the saints in the calendar. Belonged to William Bateman (1787-1835) and to his son, Thomas Bateman (1821-61); their collection, sold by order of the Court of Chancery, Sotheby’s, 25 May 1893, lot 1040 to Quaritch. Belonged to Robert Hoe: Cat. (1909) pp. 23-24; his sale, Anderson, New York, 1912, pt. III, n. 2064 to G. D. Smith. Precise source and date of acquisition by Henry E. Huntington unknown.
