Schullian, “A Revised List of Manuscripts of Valerius Maximus,” in Miscellanea Augusto Campana. Medioevo e Umanesimo 44, 45 (Padua 1981) 695-728, including HM 1026 on p. 720. Apparently 2 fourteenth century fragmentary manuscripts (pt. II, ff. 1-21 and pt. VIII, ff. 63-128) to which the missing portions were added in different steps to form a complete text; one person then added the chapter list at the beginning, the foliation and the colophon at the end; the painted initials were also all completed at this stage. Parchment, ff. ii (modern parchment) + i (contemporary parchment) + 128 + ii (modern parchment); 270 × 202 mm. 1-38(through f. 24) 46 58(through f. 38) 68(through f. 46) 7-88(through f. 62) 9-158 1610. I. f. i recto-verso: palimpsest, now containing the chapter list, added s. XV, in a running hand with reference to folio numbers; the same person foliated the entire manuscript in red arabic numerals with some errors, and added the colophon on f. 128v; the underlying text, a missal with fragments of the service for the Thursday and Friday after the third Sunday in Lent, s. XIV, 2 columns of at least 25 lines. II and III (see below). Palimpsest, the underlying text, perpendicular to the present one, apparently from the register of a notary named “Micchaele” for March 1341, as is legible on f. 6v; notary marks on ff. 5, 13v. II. ff. 1-21v: s. XIVmed, quires 1-3 (excluding the last part of f. 21v, and ff. 22-24v). Catchwords in the center of the lower margin between 4 small decorative strips; quires numbered in roman numerals in the inner corner of the last leaf verso; leaf signatures on the first quire in red ink, a-d. Ruled space: 180 × 115 mm., 34-35 long lines, ruled in lead with top and bottom 2 lines full across; pricking visible in the outer and lower margins. Written in a round gothic book hand using black ink. 2-line red or blue initials with simple harping in the other color; alternating red and blue paragraph marks and running headlines across the opening. III. ff. 21v-24v: s. XIV2, the end of the third quire on leaves originally left blank. Catchword in the center of the lower margin between 4 S-shaped flourishes. Ruled space: 180 × 115 mm., 31-35 long lines; no ruling visible. Written in a small gothic book hand in brown ink. Simple red, blue or purple 2-line initials, some with rough harping. IV. ff. 25-30v: s. XIV2, the fourth quire, and so numbered in roman numerals in the inner right corner of the last leaf verso. Catchword as in pt. III. Ruled space: 180 × 135 mm., 2 columns of 32-34 lines, ruled in lead. Same hand and ink as in pt. III; some rubrics; 1-line initials in red, blue or purple with no flourishing. V. ff. 31-38v: s. XIV2, the fifth quire. Catchword decorated in the same manner as those of pts. III and IV, but erased and rewritten in the hand of pt. VI. Ruled space: 190 × 140 mm., 2 columns of 32-33 lines, ruled in lead. Written probably by the same person as pts. III and IV in a larger and less regular hand. Initials as in pt. IV. VI. ff. 39-46v: s. XIV2, the sixth quire. Catchward as in pts. III-V. Ruled space: 185 × 130 mm., 2 columns of 35-39 lines, ruled in lead (frame only?). Written in a running gothic script. Simple 1-line initials in red, blue or purple. VII. ff. 47-62v: s. XIV2, quires 7 and 8. Catchwords as in pts. III-VI. Ruled space: 180 × 140 mm., 2 columns of 30-35 lines, ruled in lead, perhaps frame only. Written in a round Italian gothic script. 3- or 2-line initials in red, blue or purple, with no flourishing. VIII. ff. 63-128v: s. XIV2, quires 9-16. Catchwords placed in space between columns in lower margin. Ruled space: 185 × 135 mm., 2 columns of 26-33 lines, ruled in lead. Written in an angular gothic script. On f. 63, three 2-line initials in red or purple with penwork flourishing of the other color; also on f. 63, a carefully drawn manicule touched with the same colors; other 2-line initials, unflourished, in red, blue, or purple; paragraph marks in the same colors; initials in the text slashed in red; the first letters of books washed in yellow. Major initials for the prologue and the books, usually 6-line (but as small as 4-line or as large as 9-line) by one person in dark shades of orange, olive green, purple, ochre, blue and dusky pink, patterned in white, set on square grounds with acanthus leaf infilling and extensions (ff. 1, 11v, 23v, 37v, 50v, 66, 79v, 94, 112v). Each book preceded by a chapter list in red link in the same hand as pt. VIII. Running headlines alternating red and blue across the opening through pt. II; thereafter the books are numbered in small roman numerals in the ink of the text. Bound by Birdsall in stamped tan morocco. Written in Italy, perhaps in the north-east, to judge from the orthography; pt. II was copied towards the middle of the fourteenth century; the remainder is somewhat later, from the second half of the century. Erased ex libris in the lower margin of f. 1. On f. 128v is an ownership note, s. XV: “Iste liber est mei bastiani pinelli <?> quem emi a Iohanne bernegensi”; in a different hand, below that, is the note “di G.b.” (Giovanni Bernegense?). Placed by G. D. Smith in a sale by Anderson, New York, 12 December 1917, n. 441 with plate of f. 1 to G. D. Smith. Precise source and date of acquisition by Henry E. Huntington unknown.
