BARARA Archive at the Bancroft Library

The Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley is the repository for the Bay Area Rock Art Research Association. Currently those materials include both the papers of Bill Sonin and Paul Freeman along with publications produced by the Bay Area Rock Art Research Association. The Bill Sonin Papers include 36 boxes of research material that consist of site reports, research notes, and other documentation assembled by Sonin and relating to rock art in California and other western states, including Utah, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, Oregon, New Mexico, Colorado, and Baja California. The Paul Freeman papers, a new and ongoing acquisition currently consists of one box of material containing correpondence, notes and research materials, chiefly relating to Freeman's book, The Rock Art Lithographs of Lala Eve Rivol. The archive also includes printed materials, and background information relating to various articles published by the Bay Area Rock Art News, edited by Freeman, including expeditions to the Tassili in Algeria in 1990; Olmec sites in Mexico in 1993; and Har Karkom, in the Israeli Negev in 1994, and videos related to these expeditions. Recently a series of videos on California sites has been added. These include the Southern San Joaquin Valley - Sierra Nevada Area, the San Francisco Bay Area, the Carrizo Plain Monitoring Project, and the Chumash Area. The Rock Art Studies bibliographic database, compiled by Leigh Marymor, is the largest bibliographic database available for rock art literature. The database has been donated to the BARARA Archive and is available for online literature searches. Researchers interested in these subjects are welcome to use those materials in the Bancroft Library.

The Bay Area Rock Art Research Association archive forms part of the Western Americana Collection, the Bancroft Library's largest resource, which documents the history of western North America, particularly from the Western Plains states to the Pacific Coast and from Panama to Alaska, with greatest emphasis on California and Mexico.

The materials related to the Bay Area Rock Art Research Association are catalogued on OskiCat, the UCB on-line catalog. Much of the same information can also be found on MELVYL, the UC system-wide online catalog.
