Terminology

Debate exists over terminology used to describe the experience of Japanese Americans in the United States during World War II. Terms from the era such as “evacuation” and “relocation” are considered to be governmental euphemisms for the forced removal of Japanese Americans from the West Coast. “Internment camp” and “assembly center” are also considered misleading. Some have suggested terms such as “confinement” and “temporary detention center” as more accurate. A mix of terms is represented throughout this site in the interest of historical accuracy and with respect for individual choice.
