Introduction

The Robert B. Honeyman Jr. Collection of Early Californian and Western American Pictorial Material is one of the premier pictorial collections of The Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley. The collection, containing over 2300 items, includes original paintings, drawings, prints, sketchbooks, lettersheets, and other pictorial materials, with emphasis on early California and the Gold Rush period.

With the completion of the The Robert B. Honeyman Jr. Collection Digital Archive project on November 1, 1998, the collection is now available online as part of the California Heritage Collection. The California Heritage Collection, an online archive of over 30,000 images illustrating California's history and culture from the collections of The Bancroft Library, resides within the Online Archive of California, a union database of finding aids, or guides, to archival collections at more than 30 institutions from within the state of California. The Robert B. Honeyman Jr. Collection Digital Archive project is also a participant in Museums and the Online Archive of California project; a consortium of museum and special collections seeking to provide standardized access to collections held by archives, museums, and libraries throughout the state of California.
