The preservation effort was undertaken to ensure the longevity of these documents as historical artifacts. The access component followed the model established in the successful LSTA Honeyman Digital Archive Project by providing full, detailed descriptions of the collections, and Internet access to the digital facsimiles of the images, which are part of the California Digital Library's Online Archive of California. Their fragility and high value has made it necessary to curtail access by the general public. It is hoped that this collaboration between the California State Library and The Bancroft Library will serve as a model for similar Online Archive of California collaborations in the near future.
