California Art Research Archive

The California Art Research Archive (CARA) brings together biographies about early Bay Area artists with digitized materials and related archival collections held by the Bancroft library that are by or associated with those artists.

The biographies are taken from the 1987 microfiche edition of the California Art Research Project, a twenty volume set of monographs originally published by the Works Progress Administration in 1937. The original masters for the 1987 microfiche edition were recently acquired and subsequently digitized by The Bancroft Library in June 2014. The complete set of the 1987 edition is available online:

The CARA site enhances the California Art Research Project by connecting its contents to related materials held by the Bancroft Library, as well a mapping the artists' biography, providing a general bibliography, and describing the projects.

The CARA site was developed by intern Mèlanie Le Torrec from the École Nationale Supérieure des Sciences de l'Information et des Bibliothèques in France. Her internship was directed by Mary Elings, Head of Digital Collections, with assistance from Digital Collections Assistant Julie Goldsmith and UCB Students Ai Hua and Mi Hua.
