Biotechnology at 25: Perspectives on History, Science,
and Society
A Joint Program of UC Berkeley Extension and The Bancroft Library
The Bancroft Library organized a symposium, Biotechnology at 25: Perspectives
on History, Science, and Society , held March 12-13, 1999 at Berkeley,
to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the invention of recombinant
DNA technology by Herbert W. Boyer (UC San Francisco) and Stanley N. Cohen
(Stanford University). The symposium also inaugurated The Bancroft Library's The
Program in Bioscience and Biotechnology Studies as
a national center for study and research.
The symposium featured more than a dozen prominent scientists, industry leaders,
and social scientists who addressed an audience of more than 1,000 people on
the development of the biotechnology industry and future implications for science,
industry and society.
