Frederick Schiller Faust authored numerous works under the pseudonym Max Brand (and George Owen Baxter, George Challis, John Frederick, and others). These western novels and writings continue in print today, and are also reprinted and translated in several languages.

Red Wind and Thunder Moon originally appeared in 1927 issues of Western Story Magazine, under the pseudonym, George Owen Baxter. The Thunder Moon stories are regarded as among the author’s best work.

The colorful and violent imagery of the cover illustration for the original 1927 pulp magazine (above) appears in sharp contrast to the stylized, haunting portrait that adorns the cover of the 1996 hard-bound volume.

The Bancroft Library houses an extensive collection of Max Brand publications and personal papers. Brand was a member of the University of California Berkeley Class of 1915, and his works continue to be a source of pleasure and study for both fans and scholars of literature of the American West. In addition to gifts of books and papers from family members, James L. Henry recently donated an important collection of Brand publications, including 418 issues of Western Story Magazine to The Bancroft Library.
