Hubert Howe Bancroft
INDIANS. BANCROFT LIBRARY SCRAPBOOKS, Volume 78

This newspaper article details the story of an Indian family, Frank and Juanita Dick, eighteen and sixteen years old, and their baby, Domingo. At the baby’s birth, the "head men" of the Chuccsanoc tribe decried that the child was a messenger of ill luck and should die. The parents protested and the father fought off three Indians intent upon murder.

Following this fight "the young buck sought a civilized society for his family and landed in San Francisco."

The Indians are described as "copper-colored parents" and "swarthy" with "long straight coal-black hair peculiar to their race." The child is portrayed as "a pure albino" with "its flesh and hair as white as a dove, although its features are of the pure Indian type."

Hubert Howe Bancroft, San Francisco publisher and printer, amassed an unparalleled collection of historical publications and research materials on California and Western America. These publications and manuscripts, acquired by the University of California in 1905, serve as the core collection for The Bancroft Library.

H.H. Bancroft commissioned a variety of historical research projects, including an extensive compilation of dictations (oral history interviews) with individuals across California. The transcriptions of these interviews are complimented by a large collection of scrapbooks that contain clippings of articles from newspapers and publications on hundreds of topics relating to California and the American west. This volume focuses on Indians of California and western America.
