Mark Twain’s appreciative comments on Bret Harte’s “The Luck of Roaring Camp” and “The Outcasts of Poker Flat”

In the margin of the 1870 edition of The Luck of Roaring Camp and Other Sketches, Clemens writes:

good.

This is Bret’s very best sketch, & most finished—nearly blemishless.

And on the last page of “The Outcasts of Poker Flat,” he writes:

This ranks next to “The Luck” unquestionably.
