De Quille, Clemens’s friend and sometime roommate in Virginia City, was local editor of the Territorial Enterprise from 1862 until his death in 1898. Widely recognized for his humorous writing and as an authority on mining, he wrote The Big Bonanza (1876) with Clemens’s encouragement.
