A Toast from Mr. Punch [original cartoon by Bernard Partridge, 1907; clipping in Appert
Collection, vol. 1, p. 23]
In July 1907 Clemens was the guest of honor at the traditional "round table" dinner at the offices of Punch magazine in London. The high point of the evening came when Clemens was presented with this original drawing by Bernard Partridge.
The sketch, which had been featured in Punch on 26 June, depicts Mr. Punch proposing a toast, "Sir, I honor myself by drinking your health. Long life to you—and happiness—and perpetual youth."
