"Lawn Whist" [manuscript, 1905]
Inspired by an account of a recent party that included an elaborate chess game with human chess pieces, Clemens invented his own variation on the theme: a game of whist, played outdoors on a lawn with costumed humans standing in for cards and lively music accompanying the play, while the "Joker" acted as master of ceremonies.
"The Joker," he stipulated, "should announce the Shuffle, the band should strike up some bewildering music suitable to the function, & the Cards should swarm to Middle Space & do the Shuffle, & do it right, & with hilarity."
