During their stay at Onteora, an artists' retreat in the Catskills, in the summer of 1890, Clemens enjoyed improvising plays with his daughters.

Here he appeared as Leander, outfitted with a hot-water bag, who tried to swim the Hellespont to snatch a kiss from his beloved Hero.
