Olivia Clemens wrote a script based on her husband's book and coached her two oldest daughters and some of their friends for a surprise performance in March 1885. The costuming was reprised for photographs taken a year later.

Clemens was delighted, calling it "one of the prettiest private theatrical performances I have ever seen." The play became a family favorite, and in later productions Clemens himself played Miles Hendon.
