A Playful Correspondent

Clemens was a prolific letter writer, whose correspondence often revealed him at his most mischievous. We show four examples here: a piecemeal letter to his mother; a "rebus-letter" from 1881; a deadpan "business" letter to a water company; and an illustrated letter to a young friend.
