Starting in the 1880s Clemens began to hone his skill for composing amusing and pithy sayings and to compile lists of the results.

The maxims, often much revised, can be found scattered throughout his notebooks and on sundry manuscript scraps.

He made use of his maxims in the chapter headings for Pudd'nhead Wilson (1894) and Following the Equator (1897).
