Exhibit item: Quotation: "POMADE FOR BEAUTIFYING THE HAIR: Quotation: "We had a rarity for dinner yesterday. I should like to send you a piece - a steak of a grizzly bear. It was the finest meal I have ever eaten, so tender and juicy. The bear was killed 60 miles above, on the river and was as large as a cow. They are not as hard to kill as you and I had read. This fellow was killed with three shots. The meat sold readily for 75 cents per lb." Quotation: " ...B'ar meat," said a hunter from whom I was seeking information, "b'ar meat is the best meat in the mountains; their skins make the best beds, and their grease the best butter. Biscuit shortened with b'ar grease goes as far as beans; a man will walk all day on a couple of them biscuit." Quotation: "As the rains drove the deer and other animals down from the mountains, game of all kind became abundant. 'Grizzly bear steak' became a choice dish at the eating houses; I had the satisfaction one night of eating a slice of one that had weighed eleven hundred pounds. The flesh was a bright red color, very solid, sweet, and nutritious; its flavor was preferable to that of the best pork." |
