Exhibit item: French ship La Vénus visited California in 1836-37 and took home to Paris a skeleton of an old male grizzly captured at Monterey. The complete mounted skeleton is in the Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle. Lithographs of both the skeleton and a live bear appear in Abel du Petit-Thouars’ luxurious atlas describing the expedition. |
