Louis Choris was on the Russian Ship Rurik, commanded by Otto von Kotzebue, when it visited San Francisco in 1816. Choris made a drawing of a small female grizzly that was brought on board by hunters on October 22. It is the earliest known portrayal of a California grizzly.
