Trade Cards of San Francisco Businesses, 1881-1883

Illustrated business cards promoted the goods and services of a wide variety of enterprises in the late nineteenth century. Many of them were humorous. These cards are distinctive examples of popular caricatures, racial and ethnic stereotypes, and social attitudes of the 1880s. The use of grizzly bears in trade cards was not uncommon.
