James D. Phelan. Letter to Joseph C. Rowell. San Francisco, 1 December 1898.

The mayor of San Francisco enthusiastically endorsed the purchase of the Bancroft Library, terming it a "Mecca for students" and concluding: "The University is the place for it and I trust it shall be its good fortune to possess it." Rowell received similar supportive letters from other civic leaders, prominent professors, and historians.
