More than 350 members and guests of the Friends of the
Bancroft Library attending the annual
meeting in 1965 which marked the formal retirement of George P.
Hammond. Among the festivities were a special exhibition of
Hammond publications and honors; a retrospective show of
outstanding accessions acquired during his directorship; the
presentation of Dr. Hammond's portrait, painted by Maynard Dixon
Stewart, and a surprise Festschrift to mark the occasion: GPH:
An Informal Record of George P. Hammond and His Era in the
Bancroft Library. Seen here are Susanna Dakin, presiding,
